1. When should I see Dhansay & Roberts Biokineticists for my injury rehabilitation?

We as Biokineticists treat injuries using exercise to improve function and pain. So, it is appropriate to see a Biokineticist when an injury needs an exercise-based rehabilitation programme as the main form of treatment.

We can help with the treatment of 3 main types of injuries:

  • Overuse
  • Post-surgery
  • Traumatic

Depending on the type of injury, Biokineticists will intervene at different stages of the rehab process.

Injuries we can help rehabilitate from the start of the rehab process:

1. Overuse injuries
  • Injuries caused by excessive activity over a period of time (instead of sudden injury event).
  • E.g. Achilles tendinopathy (Achilles tendon pain), Patellofemoral pain syndrome (Runner’s knee), Rotator cuff tendinopathy (shoulder impingement).View the most common overuse injuries we rehabilitate in point 7 below.
  • You may see us directly, without having seen a GP, Physiotherapist or other healthcare provider.

Injuries we can help rehabilitate post-physiotherapy

A physiotherapist should be seen for the first phase of rehab for injuries post-surgery and other traumatic injuries. These may require early-stage exercise and hands-on therapies such as mobilisation, manipulation and massage. You may then be referred to a Biokineticist to complete the exercise-based phase of rehabilitation.

2. Injuries post-surgery
  • E.g. ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair/meniscectomy, rotator cuff repair.
  • If you have already completed physiotherapy, you are welcome to come see us directly without being referred by a physiotherapist.
3. Traumatic injuries
  • Injuries caused by a sudden injury event
  • E.g. Muscle strain, ligament sprain, bone fracture or other soft tissue injury.
  • If you have already completed physiotherapy, you are welcome to come see us directly without being referred by a physiotherapist.

2. Do I need a referral from my doctor or other healthcare professional?

No you do not. You can come see us directly if you have an injury that requires an exercise-based rehab programme; see point 1 above.

3. What should I expect on the first visit?

The first visit will be a ±60 min assessment to determine the nature and extent of your injury. This is a physical evaluation designed to test your current level of function, that may consist of flexibility, strength and movement testing. This will help us determine the best rehabilitation programme to get you back to doing the activities you value.

4. What should I bring along to the first visit?

  • Comfortable training clothing
  • X-rays, MRIs (or other scans) if available
  • Healthcare provider letters/reports.

5. How many rehab sessions will I need?

This will depend on the type of injury, your current level of function and the type of activity you would like to return to. We will try our best to give you an estimate of the expected rehab time-frame.

6. Do you accept medical aid for your services?

Yes we do. We are registered with the vast majority of medical aids. We also offer the service of claiming for sessions on your behalf, but any shortfall will need to be covered by you.

7. List of common overuse injuries we rehabilitate:
