Do I Need A Biokineticist?

When you sustain an injury, it can be challenging trying to find the healthcare practitioner that is best suited to treat your specific injury. This is made especially difficult by the fact that different professions often treat the same types of injuries but at different stages of the rehabilitation process.

To help you determine if a Biokineticist is an appropriate practitioner to treat your injury, follow these steps:

1. Identify the type of injury you have:

A.  Overuse injury

Injury caused by excessive activity over a period of time (instead of a sudden injury event). E.g., Achilles tendinopathy (Achilles tendon pain), Patellofemoral pain syndrome (Runner’s knee), Rotator cuff tendinopathy (shoulder impingement) etc.

If this is you:

It is appropriate to see a Biokineticist from the start of the rehabilitation process

B. Traumatic injury

Injury caused by a sudden injury event. E.g., Muscle strain, ligament sprain, bone fracture or other soft tissue injury.

If this is you:

A Physiotherapist should be seen for the first phase of rehabilitation. Thereafter, you may be referred to a Biokineticist to complete the exercise-based phase of rehabilitation.

C. Injury post-surgery

E.g., ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair/meniscectomy (knee), rotator cuff repair (shoulder), Lumbar spine surgery (lower back) etc.

If this is you:

A Physiotherapist should be seen for the first phase of rehabilitation.  Thereafter, you may be referred to a Biokineticist to complete the exercise-based phase of rehabilitation.

Which Stage Of Recovery Are You In?

Remember, Biokineticists intervene at the stage when exercise should be the main form of treatment for your injury.
